Nandi Hills is a picnic spot situated 60 kms from Majestic or Kempagowda Bus Station, Bangalore at Chikkaballapur of Kolar District, Karnataka at a height of around 1479 metres or 4852 feet above sea level.
How to Reach Nandi Hills
You can travel by two-wheeler / Car or take a KSRTC bus from Kempagowda Bus Station. Bus journey will be around 2 hours from Bangalore. If you don’t get direct bus to Nandi Hills, then you can take a bus to Chikkaballapur and from there take another bus to Nandi Hills. Since it is a tourist attraction private buses and cars are also available from Chikkaballapur.
If you are travelling on your own vehicle then make sure you reach Nandi Hills before Sunrise. Sun rising from the clouds is a wonderful sight to watch if you are a nature lover. Two wheelers are not allowed beyond Nandi Hills gate but you can take your cars by paying for the car entry ticket.
From Bangalore take the route to Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli. Don’t turn towards airport but continue further and after around 10 kms from the Airport you will see a signboard indicating you to turn left for Nandi Hills. From this spot, foot of Nandi Hills is around 14 kms. You have to travel another 8 kms to the top of Nandi Hills.
What to see
Tippu Sultan’s Fort and Palace: The Palace was built by Tippu Sultan to spend Summer.
Tippus Drop: The cliff from where convicts were dropped to their death during the reign of Tippu Sultan. Best place to see Sunrise or Sunset.
Temples: Gavi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple (cave temple), Yoga Nandishwara Temple (on Nandi Hill top), Bhoga Nandishwara Temple (at Nandhi Village or Nandigram)
Amrita Sarovar: Beautiful Lake with crystal clear water on Nandi Hills.
Bhramashram: Cave near Nandi Hills.
Origins of Palar and Arkavathi Rivers: Nandi Hills is the origin of these two rivers.
Muddenahalli: Birthplace of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (Bharat Ratna) the engineer and a visionary.
Entry Fee: Rs.5.
Mayura Pine Top – Veg / Non-veg Restaurant run by Karnataka Tourism Department.
Timings: 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Best Season to Visit: Throughout the Year
Word of Caution:
Be careful with the monkeys (you will find plenty of them) if you carry your own food. They will snatch any eatables from your hands.
